Chong H. Kim, Mt. SAC RT Student

Chong H. Kim was an extraordinary student at Mt San Antonio College in Walnut. He received a recognition award in his first year for outstanding academic achievement. During his second year of education, Chong once again was a standout student and the Student Awards Committee selected him as a recipient in his second year as well. The CSRC-SCR does not usually give awards twice, but Chong was such an outstanding student candidate that the selection committee wanted to recognize him again.

Between the time of selection and the presentation of the award, Chong participated in the American Lung Association’s annual “Fight for Air” event in Los Angeles. The event is held at the AON Building, the 2nd tallest building in downtown L.A. This event allows participants to raise money for lung health by obtaining sponsor donations. Participants are allowed to climb the fire stairway from street level to the top of the building – 63 floors. Once on top of the AON, participants have an amazing view of Los Angeles and the surrounding region. During Chong’s climb to the top, he suffered a fatal heart attack. The CSRC-SCR and Chong’s classmates were devastated. In addition to being an outstanding student academically, we found that he was very well respected and loved by his classmates and the faculty. The CSRC-SCR made the award to Chong’s, widow posthumously and announced that we were going to name a student award in his honor.
